Your goal can be as big as becoming the world champion, or as simple as feeling more confident in yourself. It does not need to be extravagant, it just needs to serve you and be SMART (Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-Sensitive). For myself, I like to enter tournaments. It gives me a time to be ready by and it forces me to show up. What goals do you set up for yourself? What do they require of you?
2. Use Your Professor To Hold You Accountable
Talk to your professor about what your goals are in jiu jitsu to help hold you accountable. Don’t be shy, they are supposed to be there to help you! Your professor can help in so many ways. They can help you further define those goals, draw a road map to get there and check in with you on your progress. Don’t forget, you are not only investing your time into the sport, but also your money. Make sure you get the most bang for your buck! Ask questions – what can I do to improve, how would you do XYZ, what do I have to do to prepare for this tournament, etc. Most times, your professor would be so happy to see you taking your jiu jitsu seriously and will be glad to help.
3. Find Your BJJ Bestie To Stay Accountable in BJJ
Your fave training partner can also be your best accountability tool. Sometimes it’s easier to make it to class when you have someone to share the joys and pains of it with. If you’re like me, it’s easier for me to push through when someone else is counting on me. So if I tell my BJJ bestie that I’ll be there, best believe I will fight through the lack of motivation and dread to make sure she’s not alone. This could be someone that you partner with all the time, or maybe a friend at another gym. Whoever you find that you can enjoy the journey with, share with them your goals and you can hold each other accountable to stick it through.
4. Vision board it, baby
A vision board might sound corny to some, but real goal-setters (and achievers) know the value in it. This too does not need to be extravagant. It can be as big as a bulletin board you set up on your wall, or it can be as simple as a few pics on your phone’s wallpaper. Find what works for you. A vision board is a great tool that can help you stay accountable in jiu jitsu. Put your goals up where you can see them and be reminded of what those goals are. You can’t always rely on motivation to get you to training, you need to rely on discipline. A visual of your goals can help remind you of what you are trying to accomplish and will help you tap into discipline.
5. Use Social Media To Stay Accountable in BJJ
Putting yourself out there on social media is the simplest way to hold yourself accountable on your jiu jitsu journey. Sharing with the world your progress and your story allows your friends and family to support you. Usually people who see your stories of you working towards your goals provide positive feedback and encouragement. For some, posting goals and progress puts pressure on them, and that pressure helps get them to do what they need to do. It puts the ownership back on you, saying hey, you said you were gonna do this, now do it. Find a community online that will help you stay encouraged and excited about jiu jitsu. In doing so, it will be easier for you to stay accountable in jiu jitsu.
